Stevia has gained popularity in recent years as it’s a natural (derived from a flower) sweetener that has zero calories. It’s also ideal for those watching their blood sugar (e.g. diabetics).
Does it Taste Like Regular Sugar?
Definitely not! It is much sweeter and has a bit of an aftertaste.
So, it will take your palate awhile to adjust. Be patient… introduce it slowly into your diet. You can try using ½ sugar, honey, etc., and ½ Stevia to start. Over time, you will love the taste and not miss sugar at all.
Is it Safe & How Can Stevia Be Used?
- Most people don’t seem to have reactions to it and it’s been FDA approved. I have read that some people develop allergies to Stevia, which may be because it’s derived from a flower.
- Stevia can be used in tea, coffee, baking, etc. Although it’s more expensive than man-made zero calorie sweeteners (e.g. Equal, Nutrisweet), a little goes a long way and it’s been said to be 100 times sweeter than table sugar.
- Stevia is sold under many labels/brands so it’s best to do a little research before you buy. Many brands add fillers so it’s not 100% pure. Look for stevia that doesn’t have a bunch of fillers. You can tell by reading the label.
Where Can I Buy It?
I love Stevita (pictured) but I’ve tried other brands as well and had great success. I usually order online for the best value and I buy in bulk since I use it for many things. Pure Stevia can also be found at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods or any natural food store.
